1. Ekadhikina Purvena – By one more than the previous one. This sutra is used to find the root of numbers or squares of numbers. It is also used for special division problems, such as 1/24.

2. Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah – All from 9 and the last from 10. This sutra instructs students to begin on the left side of a subtraction problem and subtract 9 from each digit and 10 from the last.

3. Urdhva-Tiryagbyham – Vertically and crosswise. This is the formula used in multiplication. It can also be used in division of large numbers by other large numbers.

4. Paraavartya Yojayet – Transpose and adjust. When solving an equation, use zero as a value of the denominator. The result will give three values for x. Discard the term where there is a value of x set at a particular number. Substitute for x in the remaining two terms to find a constant for the equation.

5. Shunyam Saamyasamuccaye – When the sum is the same on each side of an equation, the sum of the problem is zero.

6. (Anurupye) Shunyamanyat -If one is in ratio, the other is zero. This formula helps solve simple equations containing long strings of numbers.

7. Sankalana-vyavakalanabhyam – By addition and by subtraction. Used for equations where x and y coefficients are interchangeable.

8. Puranapuranabyham – By the completion or non-completion. This is a way of solving algebraic equations by seeing the problem as a whole rather than as a simplified equation.

16. Gunakasamuchyah – The factors of the sum are equal to the sum of the factors.
