Unique Dog Names for your Unique Pooch!

unique dog namesIf you thought naming your kid was going to be tough, try naming your dog.  Especially if you are adamant on coming up with something unique, chances are that it is going to take more than a few simple searches or thirty minutes of pondering to come up with a name special enough to represent your new ball of fur.  Just as with children, everyone thinks that their dog is, “The cutest one ever” and that there is “No one quite like (insert dog name here) around!”  If this is true (and we are not going to say it is not), then coming up with a unique name for your pooch is just the way to go.  We are going to give you some tips and hints on coming up with the best unique name, so get ready to think outside of the doggie box!

The Perfect Name

There are a few ways to brainstorm the perfect name for your dog.  Since you want it to be creative, make sure that you try to think of things unique, and less run-of –the mill when considering these tips:

  1. Think of something that is short and either one or two syllables.  Creating a unique name for your dog does not mean that the more syllables it has the more creative it will sound.  There are plenty of unique ideas that are short and sweet!
  2. Consider ending your dog’s name with a vowel, because that will make it easier for him or her to remember.
  3. You can reference some of the more normal and usual names that people generally give their pooches, and then add your own twist.  For example, “Spot” and be “Spotterina” – and make sure that you are naming a girl dog!
  4. An easy way to come up with some ideas is to think about your dog’s personality.  If you have a huge dog, you might not want to call him “Little Tyke” or anything of that sort.  Although, that can be cute to some people.
  5. If you have a unique sense of humor, the better!  You can incorporate your humor into coming up with a unique name for your dog.

Teaching Your Dog Its Name

Seeing that you have put a lot of effort into choosing a unique and creative name for your dog, you are definitely going to want them to respond to their new name.  Here are some steps you can take to teach your dog its name:

  1. Once you have your dog’s name picked out, make sure you say their name clearly when they are near you.  Use a high (as high as you can go) tone with your dog, as dog respond well to high pitches.  Begin by doing this when they are next to you, and slowly increase the distance that you use when calling them.
  2. Every time that they respond to their name, give them a treat until they get the hang of it.
  3. Once your dog seems to get the hang of their name, do not stop there.  Make sure you continue saying their name frequently, even if it just to get their attention periodically throughout the day.
  4. You cannot give your dog continuous treats, so praise your dog every time that they respond by doing things with them that they like.   For instance, if they come to you when called, rub their tummy, play fetch with them, or take them for a walk.

One of A Kind!

Every dog is unique, and with a unique and creative name, your new friend will be sure to feel like the most important pooch on the block!
