Herbal Medicine or Folk Medicine for Self-Healing

It has not been all that long that we have started to rely on medical physicians and drugs for our healing. This type of medicine has been around for only a couple of hundred years. Before that, there were medical practitioners but they were nothing like what you see today. In those days, medicines were what they had on hand like herbs and metals. There were no drugs like we know them today.

Herbal medicine still has its place in society. While some of the medicines are things we would not think to use today because we know of the horrendous side effects from the substances, there are a great many of the cures that we do still use today. Your dentist might have used a drop of clove oil to help you through a toothache. This is an ancient remedy that was used to numb the skin and help to disinfect the area. Maybe your general physician told you to have a cup of chamomile tea before going to bed to help you fall asleep. This is an ancient calming medicine and a tea used to be called an infusion. There are a good many herbal remedies that we use today for self-healing.

Black Salve Recipe

It used to be that no family would be without a jar of black salve to treat cuts, wounds and boils. This stuff was pretty ugly but heavily relied upon as a self-healing medicine. It works today just as well as it worked hundreds of years ago. If you would like to give it a try, then try this recipe.

3 ounces Olive Oil
2 ounces Coconut Oil or Cocoa Butter
2 ounces of Bee’s Wax

1 Tablespoon Honey
2 Tablespoons Clay
2 Tablespoons Super Fine Carbon Powder

1 teaspoon Vitamin E

Heat the oils and bee’s wax in a small pot, standing right there with it until it is almost completely melted. Remove from the heat and stir it until it is completely melted.

Stir in the honey and then add the clay and carbon powder. Last, add the vitamin E and blend well. Pour into a small jar. Cover and let cool overnight.

The next day, check your salve and see if it is soft enough to spread easily. If it is too hard then you can warm it up and add more olive oil until you get it to a nice, sticky, but thick consistency. You want to be able to dab it onto a wound and have it stay there. So, it shouldn’t be too runny nor so hard that it is tough to work with.

Honey is in the formula because honey is a wonderful antibacterial substance. If you have a cut, dab some honey on it. You will find that it will heal a lot faster than a cut without honey on it. The honey will help keep the wound from getting dirt into it but it also will kill germs.

Carbon powder can be hard to find. You can sometimes find it for sale online. It is commonly purchased to make homemade bullets. The form for making bullets best to buy because that is the super fine carbon. Other carbon powders might be coarsely ground and that isn’t very practical for a salve. Carbon powder is also called charcoal powder. If you can’t find it in bulk, it is for sale in the health food store in capsule form. Just empty the capsules into your salve. It is more expensive to buy it this way but if you can’t find it online, you can get it at the health food store.

If you are missing some of the ingredients, you can do some substitutions. Coconut oil is available at Walmart and many grocery stores, but you can substitute cocoa butter or any other solid fat. Even lard or tallow will work in its place. Any liquid oil can be substituted for the olive oil. For clay you can use French Clay or Kaolin Clay, whatever you are able to get. There are a lot of different types of clay and they will all work the same.

The oils and wax are in the formula just to make the salve. It is the base and doesn’t serve much of a purpose other than to hold the medicinal ingredients together. The honey’s purpose is to serve as a protectant and antiseptic. The clay and the carbon both act to pull the toxins and infection out of the wound. The vitamin E, which is added last so it is not destroyed by the heat, is a well-known skin healer.

Many people do add herbal extracts or essential oils to the salve to give additional healing benefits. Some essential oils that help disinfect wounds are clove oil, tea tree oil and myrrh oil. You can add a few drops of one or more of those as the last ingredient added. They will also give the salve a little bit of a medicine scent.

To use the Black Salve, clean the wound and dry it then dab on a glop of the salve. You can put a bandage over the wound to keep the black salve on it. Put more on each day after you clean the cut or scratch. Black Salve also works great to bring boils and pimples to a head. Use Black Salve on any minor skin infection where you need to pull toxins out of the wound.

Of course, Black Salve is for minor skin treatments and not intended to replace emergency care. If you have a large or deep wound, go to the emergency room to get stitches. Use salve when it is a minor problem that is normally treated at home.

Self-Healing Techniques

As a society we have become more and more dependent on physicians and have turned over almost all responsibility for our health to outside people. We used to have no choice but to take care of ourselves and in some ways we were a lot better off for it. We knew that if we didn’t eat properly then we would become ill. If we had an injury we had to know what to do to take care of it ourselves. We knew we needed to have a good outlook on life and get proper rest and we were better off for it. Return to caring for yourself and learn some self-healing techniques. If you would like more information on all the benefits and practical uses for honey, Udemy has an online class that can get you up to speed on that also.
