Black Salve Recipe
It used to be that no family would be without a jar of black salve to treat cuts, wounds and boils. This stuff was pretty ugly but heavily relied upon as a self-healing medicine. 3 ounces Olive Oil
2 ounces Coconut Oil or Cocoa Butter
2 ounces of Bee’s Wax
1 Tablespoon Honey
2 Tablespoons Clay
2 Tablespoons Super Fine Carbon Powder
1 teaspoon Vitamin E
Heat the oils and bee’s wax in a small pot, standing right there with it until it is almost completely melted. Remove from the heat and stir it until it is completely melted.
Stir in the honey and then add the clay and carbon powder. Last, add the vitamin E and blend well. Pour into a small jar. Cover and let cool overnight.
The next day, check your salve and see if it is soft enough to spread easily. If it is too hard then you can warm it up and add more olive oil until you get it to a nice, sticky, but thick consistency. You want to be able to dab it onto a wound and have it stay there. So, it shouldn’t be too runny nor so hard that it is tough to work with.
Honey is in the formula because honey is a wonderful antibacterial substance. If you have a cut, dab some honey on it. You will find that it will heal a lot faster than a cut without honey on it. The honey will help keep the wound from getting dirt into it but it also will kill germs.
Carbon powder can be hard to find. You can sometimes find it for sale online. It is commonly purchased to make homemade bullets. The form for making bullets best to buy because that is the super fine carbon. Other carbon powders might be coarsely ground and that isn’t very practical for a salve. Carbon powder is also called charcoal powder. If you can’t find it in bulk, it is for sale in the health food store in capsule form. Just empty the capsules into your salve. If you are missing some of the ingredients, you can do some substitutions. Coconut oil is available at Walmart and many grocery stores, but you can substitute cocoa butter or any other solid fat. Even lard or tallow will work in its place. Any liquid oil can be substituted for the olive oil. For clay you can use French Clay or Kaolin Clay, whatever you are able to get. There are a lot of different types of clay and they will all work the same.
The oils and wax are in the formula just to make the salve. It is the base and doesn’t serve much of a purpose other than to hold the medicinal ingredients together. The honey’s purpose is to serve as a protectant and antiseptic. The clay and the carbon both act to pull the toxins and infection out of the wound. The vitamin E, which is added last so it is not destroyed by the heat, is a well-known skin healer.
Many people do add herbal extracts or essential oils to the salve to give additional healing benefits. Some essential oils that help disinfect wounds are clove oil, tea tree oil and myrrh oil.
