The exploration of Reiki, the transfer or movement of energy through the palms of a Reiki practitioner, is intrinsically tied with the practice of Kundalini yoga. Reiki is the technique of channeling energy through a patient, through means of touch, mantra, intention and meditation. Kundalini is the movement of energy, awakening through your body which can done as a solo practice through yoga asanas, breathwork, mantras and meditation. Reiki and Kundalini are greatly tied, while coming from very different roots and backgrounds.
Reiki, based on Buddhist philosophy, was made popular by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui, in the early 1920’s. Reiki can be defined as “a non-physical healing energy made up of life force energy that is guided by the Higher Intelligence, or spiritually guided life force energy.” While Kundalini is rooted in Hindu mythology. Kundalini is a serpent goddess who lies coiled up at the base of the spine around the first chakra. This snake is considered the “Kundalini Shakti,” and represents the unfolding of divine Shakti energy. The energy works it way up through your main energy channels, or “Chakras” through the Crown Chakra where you have the highest access to enlightenment, or as they call is in the Eight Limbs of Yoga, “Samadhi.” The Prana, “life force energy” also know as the Kundalini is the energizing potential of life itself.
As you can see, the two beliefs while tied into two very different religious practices have benefits that compliment both belief systems and practices within that belief system. In Reiki, you are guiding your palms over and across a body where you “feel,” energy, which could be directly connected to the Chakras. For a Reiki practitioner, understanding where the Chakras are and what they mean better identify where the point of tension or healing is in the physical, emotional, or spiritual body for the patient.
How to Clear the Energy Channels
For Reiki and Kundalini practitioners the cleansing or purification of your body is where the energy can be felt and understood most clearly. When our bodies are clouded with toxins, impurities, such as caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, or heavy sweet/salty foods that weigh us down, our energies are naturally thrown out of balance. The same can be said for any toxic relationships, environments or limiting belief systems, thought patterns and blockages from past trauma that may be eroding your main energy centers and causing imbalance in other energy bodies.
A Reiki practitioner can very easily, with clarity and proper training, understand where you have blocks by where they feel energy is bundled or “stuck,” in your physical body during a healing session. The same goes for Kundalini practitioners, when they are visualizing or meditating through the Chakras from the base of the spine upwards, if there is a sensation of blocked energy, or an inability to “see,” the color of the Chakra brightly and with clarity that could imply that emotional and spiritual issues surrounding that chakra need attention. You can consider the practice of Reiki and Kundalini an internal scan of your inner needs and desires. The idea of combining the Reiki and Kundalini is that by strengthening the relationship to your energy channels through Kundalini practices, you’re able to self-heal through Reiki.
How does it work?
To begin integrating the practice of Kundalini and Reiki, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the main chakras based on Hindu philosophy. Before you can begin the process of self-healing through Reiki, you’ll also want to understand the levels of Reiki attunements, one, two and three. The first Reiki attunement involves the help of a teacher and/or Reiki practitioner and is described as:
Level 1 Attunement
“…. the student may note a subtle energy flowing through his hands. This can be perceived in various ways, including heat, coolness, tickling, buzzing, or just a strange feeling in the hands. Sometimes it takes a period of time after the initiation before the student feels the energy.
The initiation connects the student’s energy system to the Universal Energy. Energy blockages are released, balancing and harmonising the major energy centres known as chakras. The initiation opens the central energy channel leading from the crown of the head to the bottom of the spine. It connects the student to the Universal Energy permanently, allowing him to channel the energy whenever he wishes.”
After you feel prepared through consistent Reiki healings and teachings, you begin the second level. In Level Two you learn the power of symbols:
Level 2 Attunement, as described by Dr Graham Crook of Reiki World:
• The Power Symbol. This increases the amount of energy that can be channelled. It enables the student to open and close the energy connection when treating himself or others. It allows the student to use the Universal energy to cleanse and purify places energetically. The power symbol can also be used as a protection around a home, car etc
• The Mental Symbol. This allows the student to enter into a different level of energy, which works on the mental and emotional levels of the person receiving the energy. It is therefore used for mental and emotional healing. It is particularly helpful in dealing with anger, sadness, anxiety, depression and problems with relationships and when sending Reiki to the cause of a condition. . It can also be used to help stop unwanted habits such as smoking.
• The Distance Symbol. This allows healing to be sent at a distance. The recipient does not have to be physically present, but could be anywhere in the world. This symbol can also be used to send Reiki into the future. If the student wants to send Reiki to something he plans to do, he simply asks the energy to arrive at a particular time, and it will be ready when that time comes. This also works for the past. Reiki can be sent to specific events in the past, or to the cause of a problem, even if the cause is unknown.
From there you go onto Level Three, which is when the Reiki student can now become a teacher. Once you feel proficient in the first three levels or Reiki healing and treatments, you can combine your Kundalini practices. By first opening the channels properly through Reiki, you are clear and vibrating on a higher frequency which enables you to tap into your energy field with healing techniques in mind. Within the pools of energy inside your own body, you have access to a great well of vital healing energy. This energy not only calms and gives greater understanding to emotional issues, but is yours to use to generate any happiness, health, resilience and inner peace that you’re seeking through your spiritual practices.
