Reiki Attunement – How to Choose the Best Reiki Initiation Program

reiki attunementReiki is a way to use the energy in your hands to balance and revitalize the life force energy within us. When our life force energy is high, we are less likely to get sick. Many people who have been ill have benefited from physical, mental and emotional healing from this hands-on energy treatment. Through Reiki attunements, you can learn how to tap into the life force energy and revitalize and heal yourself and others. For many, the attunement or initiation process starts in 1st Degree Reiki Practitioners Healing Training. For others, it is the formal initiation into healing others performed at the Reiki master level. This article discusses the role of attunement in Levels 1, 2 and Masters Reiki training.

With many reports in the media about energy healing, more people are curious and seeking an introduction to energy healing. Regular Reiki attunements is a proven way to ensure long-term good health.  One of the attractions of Reiki is that anyone can learn how to use it.  Reiki masters heal by universal energy, or Qi, that is passed through the palms. This life revitalizing energy practice is passed on from master to learner.

Reiki does not only treat physical health but also emotional, mental and spiritual health.  Ensuring your life force energy is attuned is the best way to ensure holistic wellbeing.  This Japanese healing technique is increasingly being used alongside Western medicine as part of the healing process.  Thus, demand is increasing for trained practitioners who can perform Reiki attunements.

Choosing a Reiki Initiation Master

Choosing the right Reiki master is important to the success of your attunements in all three levels of training.  Since Mikao Usui developed Reiki in 1922, many variations have followed. Ask your prospective teacher to explain his or her training and experience using Reiki.  Ask her to talk about her philosophy of Reiki and bow it may differ from that of other Reiki masters.  And importantly, ask her about any changes or enhancements to her Reiki program from the traditional practice.

The International Center for Reiki, for example, emphasizes the tradition of the traditional Tibetan techniques as well as the Usui Reiki techniques.  This program claims to make adjustments to the original Reiki technique.  In fact, there are several lineages of Reiki taught in Japan today – some of them secretive and others heavily influenced by the Western techniques. Ensure you understand the Reiki technique being offered.  Specifically ask why this system is the best for you.

Practical considerations include scheduling.  When is the class held and for how long?  Weekend courses have become popular but would a weeklong retreat be better for you? Fees vary greatly today among schools.  To administer Reiki to others, all three levels are required.  At the master level, you will be initiated into healing others. Consider at the time, money and other resources you will require to complete Masters level Reiki.

Reiki is more physically intimate than many doctor-patient relationships.  Ask yourself how comfortable you would be lying on a table for an hour receiving Reiki treatments from your teacher.  Reiki involves opening yourself up spiritually and emotionally.  If you find yourself feeling defensive or shy, continue to interview Reiki teachers.  Assess your mood.  Do feel happy around this person?  Does the instructor make you feel good about yourself?

Preparing for the Attunement Process

  1. Clear your schedule of all commitments.  If you have a lot of work and family stress during your Reiki class, it will be harder to open yourself up to the energy process. Do not plan any major social events during your Reiki initiation processes, especially those involving alcohol.
  2. Purify your system of toxins.   Eliminate caffeine, alcohol, meat and sugar from your diet. Consider fasting for a few days.
  3. Meditate for an hour each day. This is an important step that will help you calm your mind and regulate your energy flow before the lessons begin. You will get more from Reiki training if you are already raising your energy vibrations.
  4. Try and avoid stressful situations and people. Again, this is to help ensure a calm, meditative mindset.
  5. Spend more time among nature. Another relaxation technique.  Walk to work on a sunny day.  Take a stroll in the park or by the ocean instead of watching TV.

The Reiki Attunement Process

What is Reiki Initiation?

Master Usui received his ability to tap into Reiki energy through a mystical meditation. The tradition of passing Reiki down from master to student continues. Attunement is another and more recent term for Initiation, or reiju in Japanese. Pamela Miles, a Reiki practitioner, makes a noteworthy distinction between the terms attunement and initiation in her blog. Understanding the true meaning of initiation will deepen your Reiki practice. Briefly, attunement is often defined as the literal transfer of universal energy from master to student, endowing the student with the ability to become a healer. Whereas initiation refers to the beginning of learning a practice. Learning, as Miles notes, involves asking questions, and learning can be continuous. Like the continuous revitalization of energy, the practitioner should continuously develop his or her skills as an energy healer.  While initiation better captures the true intent of Reiki healing, we will continue to use the popular term attunement here. But rather than think of attunement as a right of passage as an energy healer, try and think of each attunement process as the beginning of a continuous learning process.

Reiki Attunement Through the Three Reiki Levels

The attunement or initiation process takes place in all three levels of Reiki: Reiki 1, Reiki 2, and Master level.  At each level the Master initiates the student with stronger healing energy as the student moves to higher levels of energy vibration.

Reiki 1 involves four initiations of the physical body. To become a certified level 1 Reiki practitioner, you will learn about the energy meridians of the body, the Reiki hand positions, and Reiki anatomy; and ultimately how to use the Reiki energy system to heal yourself and others. Once this learning is successfully mastered, the Level 1 Reiki attunement must be given by a Certified Reiki Master. The ceremony usually takes 20 or 30 minutes.

Reiki 2 initiates the subtle or aura body. Three Reiki symbols are taught – power, mental and distance. In addition to the sacred symbols, 2nd Degree Certified Reiki Practitioners Training teaches additional symbols and hand positions.  Some courses will also teach distant Reiki healing at this stage.

The Reiki Master level initiates the student into teaching Reiki. The Master symbol is taught. Some Masters refer to this third stage as the official attunement or initiation stage as an energy healer. At Level 3, you will learn how to do Reiki attunement on others.

Distance Reiki Attunement

Many people offer the opportunity to receive Reiki and other forms of energy healing at a distance.  While some distance healers have proven that they draw from a powerful energy source, most Reiki masters do not recommend distance healing. Anecdotally, many of those using distance healing report that the energy is not as strong.  Some masters believe that the physical touch is essential to deliver the required healing energy. Practical considerations include difficulties obtaining local references and joining local Reiki groups to whom your healer also belongs. Whether training in Reiki or seeking healing, the same qualifications for choosing a Reiki master should be used.

The Reiki Ideals

Learning the Reiki techniques and passing through all stages of attunement/initiation is only part of the process of becoming a responsible energy healer. You must also uphold the moral and ethical standards of a Reiki energy healer. The Reiki Ideals were developed by Reiki founder Usui Mikao. The Reiki Ideals ensure the healthy and responsible practice of Reiki. They are an affirmation that you are the healer and responsible for your own acts of healing.  The original Reiki ideals are as follows:

The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people.
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer.
Pray these words to your heart
and chant these words with your mouth
Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind

Once you have learned Reiki, the ability to heal yourself and others physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually is with you for a lifetime. Like any learning, if you choose to pursue continuous learning – that is, always questioning and learning more – your Reiki healing energy will remain strong and more highly attuned to the universal energy source. While healing others is a constant source of reconnection with the energy source, getting attunements from time to time from other masters will keep you finely attuned to the energy source.  Reiki Level I, II and Master Certification will take from initiation to performing attunements.
