Psychological Evaluation: Breaking Mad

psychological evaluationTo properly understand the processes and uses of psychological evaluation, you need to know exactly what a psychological evaluation reveals and what it actually is. Using a combination of techniques, a psychologist can make a hypothesis about a person and their behaviors and capabilities. Psychological evaluations can only be interpreted accurately by psychologists and administered by psychologists or psychology interns. Psychological evaluations are used to determine the reasons for certain behaviors exhibited by an individual usually to determine their level of sanity or awareness. Psychological evaluations help psychologists and other people understand you better, but it will also help you understand yourself and your tendencies.

To learn more about understanding yourself,  you can take a course online on Personality and Understanding Who You Are. This can assist you in evaluating others as well. If you understand yourself, you will be more likely to understand people better through freeing your mind. Freeing yourself with this knowledge will make you more secure with yourself and able to understand people much better.

Parts of a Psychological Evaluation:

Norm-Referenced Tests

A set of tasks given under set conditions to assess different aspects of the knowledge, skills, and personality is called a standardized psychological test. Using a measurement scale of consistent individual differences, people can be lined up in accordance to rate them psychologically. The tests are designed within a specific set of parameters so that each and every person that is tested is on the same scale that is non-biased and fair for all participants. It is not perfect, but the test serves as a constant that allows psychologists to place patients onto a scale to diagnose the severity of their afflictions. The norm-group is the clearly defined group that forms a chart of values so that newly tested individuals can be added to the values and measured within this defined variance. These variance scores are given as rankings. Many of these tests exist such as reading, arithmetic, and spelling abilities which are defined as the intelligence area. Visual motor skills; gross and fine motor skills; and adaptive behavior are some of the other tests, though there are many psycho-metrically sound tests that can be used to accurately and appropriately evaluate an individual. The benefits of norm-referenced tests over non-norm-referenced tests is the specific information about the level of ability that a person has within the areas covered in each specified test. More information can be gathered in less time with these norm-referenced tests that can be gathered from extended periods of observation. The last thing evaluated is the change in the physical and social world of children as they grow to help predict future psychological tendencies.

Interviews

Interviewing is a wonderful source of information about an individual. Children interviewed are also evaluated by the interviews of their parents, teachers and anyone else that is close to that child. This way you can obtain a three-hundred and sixty degree look at the child you interview. One of the main advantages of interviews is the less strict nature of an interview. Since answers are not fixed, each interviewee may convey there message in their own words which reveals much about an individual.

You only need to understand what makes people act the way that they do. This is generally learned through classes you take on your career path, but you can take a course on understanding people through practical psychology and practice these techniques. Most often, a formal clinical interview is given to an individual to learn about the person’s childhood, habits, recent life, work, and school. Usually these are done before any assessments or evaluations are made. They will typically last up to an hour.

Observations

Sometimes it is important to observe the subject of your psychological evaluation in their “natural habitat,” which usually entails being at home, work or with friends. For children, school generally is the most common setting for this type of psychological evaluation. The main advantage is gained when one observes how the subject reacts to and fits in to his/her environment. Using this information a psychologist will know how to better treat the patient and be able to draw some conclusions about any odd behaviors.

Informal Assessment

At times even more informal tests must be administered to get a clearer view of a psychological evaluation to understand the results of the other tests given. Sometimes more informal tests reveal other psychological issues that hinder a person and their development, this is why there is so much importance given to comprehensive psychological evaluation. The only problem with this informal method, is that it is not as sound, scientifically, as the other forms of psychological assessments.

Much like storytellers, psychologists use all of the research they compile about a subject to craft a complete and masterful understanding of the person. Through words, a psychologist paints a picture of the subject that is almost three-dimensional. It is an inside-out portrait of a human being. Then using that and the information gathered by interviews with friends and family, a psychologist will give their expert recommendation on how to proceed with treatment. Since these tests and evaluations are not dependent on a test score or the result of any single test, the treatments that are then recommended are more comprehensive and appropriate for each subject. The tests are not meant to point out only the weaknesses a person has, but also their strengths.

Psychological Alternates:

For athletes a psychological evaluation is important to gauge the capacities of a player and their readiness for each game. Sports psychology is different in some ways than traditional psychology and you can learn more about those differences from experts on sports psychology.

For more of an eastern style of psychology, you can survey a class that educates students on “Energy Psychology,” which focuses on energy and balance to achieve better psychological results.

These variants still achieve psychological awareness of the subject and will help you understand yourself better. Then what makes a person become crazy? Aren’t you worried that if you understood what made a person crazy, you may become crazy yourself? Learn more about psychology any way you like, but know that it is important in all psychological evaluations to learn about all the facets of the individual.
