It allows you to add captions, titles, transition effects, adjust the audio and video framerates and levels and a lot more.

Anyone can edit videos with Movie Maker and the following tutorial will show you how to create and publish your own movie maker movie.

Starting your project in Movie Maker

Before you begin your movie, you need to have an idea of what movie you want to make and what elements the movie will contain. If you want to learn more about how to plan your movie or how to plan for the production of your movie, then the Film your TV show or movie for theater, television, DVD course from udemy will teach you some key techniques. Once you have an idea of what your movie will be about, and have made some basic creative plans, then you can go ahead and use Movie Maker to actually create your movie, hands-on.

In Movie Maker, each new movie you create is called a project. To start a new project open Movie Maker and click New Project from the Start Menu. Your screen will look like this:

Once you have a new project you can start creating your movie. To create a new movie you can either use the Record function within Movie Maker itself or you can use the Menu to add videos and photos that you have on your computer.

We will add a video file and an image to our sample project. To add video click the “Add Videos and Photos button on the Menu and then select the files you want to add.  The photos and videos will be added to the timeline section on the right.

Photos are displayed as a single frame, while video is displayed as a set of frames representing the video contents. I have added a picture of my cat and a small video of the cat to my project. The timeline that displays the photo and video looks like this:

Adding titles, effects and transitions

Now that you have a basic project, you can add titles, effects and transitions to your movie. Movie Maker offers a number of different effects for you to choose from to enable you to create professional looking videos. You will find these effects under the Visual Effects and Animation sections of the Movie Maker menu.

How to add a title and credit page to your movie

It is really simple to add a title page to your project. Click the very first frame of the movie in the timeline to insert your title page at the beginning of your movie. Then click the “Title” button. This will add a title page to your project.

Movie Maker will insert a black frame with a caption that says “My Movie” in the middle of the frame. Type your title into the caption bar to add your own title to the page. You can change the font, font size and color of your title. You can reposition the title using the handle bars that appear around the title. You can also add one of the animation elements to your title by selecting one of the Animation Effects from the Effect menus that appear when you edit the title. Effects include fade in, spin in, scroll and many more.

To add a credit page at the end of your movie, select “Credits” from the Main menu or select the type of credit page you want to install, by clicking the downward pointing arrow and then select the type of credit page. Movie Maker will insert a credits page at the end of your movie.

You can edit the contents of the credit page in the same way as you edit the title page. Your timeline should now show the title page as well as the credits page at the beginning and end of your timeline.

How to add transition effects to your movie

Movie Maker has a number of predefined effects that allow you to create seamless transitions between the different elements of your movie. To add a transition effect, you need to select the frame that you want the transition to apply to and then add the effect. Let us add a fade in effect to our title page so that the page fades in as our movie begins. To add the effect choose the Animations tab to access the animations that Movie Maker offers and then select the Effect you would like to add from the menu.

Note that different effects are available for different types of elements. For images and title pages you can select from the above transitions. Movie elements within Movie Maker have different effects that can be applied to them. Let’s add a diagonal crossfade transition to our movie to create an interesting transition from the title page to our movie clip.

To add this transition you need to click the start of the movie to choose where the transition must be added. Then choose the Animations tab and select the Transition you want to apply to your movie clip.

How to add captions to your movie

Movie Maker allows you to add great looking captions to your movies. To add a caption, select where the caption should appear and then select Caption from the Menu. Type in the caption and then set the duration of the caption. You can also specify the text, font style, and font color of the caption and you can also apply transition effects to your captions in the same way that you applied them to the title and credit pages.

How to save and publish your movie

Once you have added all the elements you want to your movie and you have added a title and credits page, you are ready to preview your movie.

You can preview your movie at any time by using the Play, Forward and Rewind buttons below the movie preview window:

When you are happy with the effects and elements you have added to your movie, then its time to save and publish your movie. Movie Maker allows you to upload your movie to some of the most popular sites automatically. To publish your movie to YouTube for example, you can choose the YouTube button from the Share Menu and then select the movie size and other settings you want to use to publish your movie.
