You will need to work through the tabs to set up the basic settings for your store. Set up the contact information for your store:
Note that fields marked with an asterisk are required fields and must be filled in.
Add a Theme for Your Store
There are many different themes to choose from on Magento. You can also customize your theme using CSS once you’ve chosen your theme. To select a theme, look at the overall design of the theme and look at the type of merchandise sold in each type of theme. To avoid major changes to the theme you have chosen, try to find a theme that represents your design as well as the merchandise you sell. It is easier to change the design elements of the theme than it is to change the way the store works, so select a theme that represents your merchandise first and then consider the design elements that suit your website best.
You can choose the preview button just below each store theme to see what the store will look like:
You can also change the theme you are previewing by selecting a new theme from the Change Theme option and then selecting change to view the new theme.
Once you have selected a theme, click “Save and Apply” to allow Magento to set up your store based on the theme you have chosen.
Click the “Start my store” tab to continue your store set up. You will notice that the design menu option is an open circle showing you that certain elements within those settings still need to be completed.
Choose “Set your Store Logo” to upload your own logo to your store. You can upload logos for your store itself, for emails and you can upload a favicon as well. Upload the logos you would like to use and then click submit.
The Plan menu option allows you to upgrade your plan from the free trial version to one of the many plans offered by Magento. The beauty of Magento is that it grows with your business and allows you to increase your functionality, and the number of products you offer, as you grow. For now, leave your plan as a free trial so you can take advantage of the time to learn how to set up your own eCommerce store.
Add Your Products
You have two options with regards to adding products. You can create new products for the store or you can use existing products and use the import feature to add your products automatically. To import products or customers, the products have to be stored in a CSV file. For this tutorial, we will add a new product to our store using the “Create New Products” option.
To set up a product, you will need to enter various categories of information for each product. Magento takes you step-by-step through each section to ensure you set up each product correctly. The sections appear on the left as menu options:
You will start with the general options for each product. To complete the general options, you need to have the following information ready to create your new product:
· Product name
· Short Description
· Product Weight
· New Date – The date the product is made available
· Country of Manufacture
Once you have entered the required information, Magento will take you to the next tab to set up the price of the product. For the price, all you need is the price of the product and the tax status, although there are many other options you can choose to enter like special prices and cost of the product. Once you have entered the price details and clicked save, and Magento will automatically take you to the next set of options you need to set up your product:
You can now add the images, Meta information, shipping, design, inventory and other aspects that relate to your product.
A great course on how to set up your products, is the Inventory Management In Magento Creating & Managing Products tutorial. Set Up Payments & Shipping
Choose to set up the payment options you wish to offer your clients when they purchase your products. Setting up payment options in Magento is really simple. Just select the payment options you want to allow and then enter the required information for each payment processor. For PayPal for example, all you need to do is enter your PayPal address and Magento will allow your customers to purchase your products using PayPal.
