Steps to Obtaining a Life Coaching Certificate

There are different methods you can take to becoming a life coach – a lot of which depend on your education, skills, time, and whether or not you have any training.  We are going to start you off from the beginning.

Education:  Obtaining a degree from a credited college or university is the first step into getting yourself certified.  Although a degree is not required, you are going to be facing a lot of competition in the life coaching field of coaches that do have degrees, and even some master degrees.  With that said, if you want to make yourself marketable in the industry, starting off with a degree is a good route to take.  Remember that there is no “Life Coaching” degree.  However, there are many other degrees that can help you excel as a life coach, such as: Psychology, Counseling, or English.  All of these degrees have skill sets that will be useful to you.

Courses or Training:  In addition to getting an education, you will also want to take some courses or classes that are in line with life coaching.

  • Online:  There are plenty of courses that you can enroll in online if you would prefer to learn in the comfort of your own home.
  • Virtual Learning:  There are also distance learning courses taught in virtual classrooms.  If you prefer in-person learning, consider enrolling in a class at a local community college or adult school that pertains to life coaching.
  • Workshops:  Since life-coaching also happens within organizations, some of these organizations also offer training classes that will give teach you essential skills for life coaching.
  • Mentoring:  One of the best ways to understand what life coaches do is to talk to a professional life coach.  Ask to talk to one over the phone or in person to get some mentoring skills and insight into the profession.

Obtain Certification:  Once you have completed your education and received some training through courses, you can set out for your certification!  Life coach certification is obtained through the ICF, which stands for the International Coaching Federation.  Here are the steps that the ICF generally requires you to take for certification:

  • Apply for your certification.
  • Take all required examinations.
  • Pay the certification fee.

There are also three levels of the certification that you will need to go through to become a life coach.  They are as follows:

  1. Associate Certified Coach (ACC):  The ACC credential requires you to obtain 60 hours of coach training and 100 hours of contact with a client.
  2. Professional Certified Coach (PCC):  The PCC credential asks for 130 hours of coach training and 750 hours of client contact.
  3. Master Certified Coach (MCC):  The MCC credential requires you to obtain 200 hours of coach training, and a solid 2,500 hours of client contact.  The MCC also asks for 10 hours of work alongside a mentor who is already qualified as a life coach.

Specialization:  Congratulations!  You should be a certified life coach by now.  Now, it is time to look into what area of life coaching you are going to want to specialize in.  You can consider options of life coaching specializations:
