José María González made $31,396 in 3 months from his Udemy course

I first spoke with Udemy instructor José María González three months ago when he declared his goal of making $30,000 on Udemy in his first 3 months of publishing. It’s three months later, and he earned $31,396! When you read why earning this amount was so important to him, you’ll understand my excitement. Read on to discover how he was able to get over 150 paying students in Month 1 of his VMware and Virtualization course and continue on to eclipse his $30K earnings goal.

What do you specialize in? I specialize in virtualization solutions (VMware). My team and I train companies who want to virtualize their data centers. We’ve also been running our blog on virtualization for the past few years, and we’re known as the place to go in Spain for virtualization. [Update 3/25/14] We also do a premium VMWare Certified Professional training, and 60% of the people who take our Udemy course sign up for our VMWare Certified Professional training.
How did you learn about Udemy? Miguel Hernandez produced a demo video for our company, and afterwards I came across his course on Udemy somehow and took the course.
What motivates you to have a big, successful launch on Udemy? Why $30,000 in 3 months? We’ve been creating free content on our blog and on YouTube for years. I decided to do the course because I promised my wife I would buy a camper van, and we’d travel around Europe and then go visit my parents in Spain where I’m from. They’re getting older, and I want my 2-year-old to be able to spend a month this summer with them. My goal was to make $30,000 in a few months to buy the camper van.
And you surpassed that goal! In fact, in just Week 1, you enrolled 150 students. How? We have over 100 videos on YouTube and 10,000 people reading our blog everyday. We’ve never charged for our content before, so we decided to see if people would be willing to pay.
I did a post on my blog asking people if they’d be interested in a paid course. If they answered yes, I collected their email addresses and promised to send them a coupon for the course. Over 300 people responded yes and submitted their email addresses!
We published the course and sent an email to the 300 respondents with a 50% off coupon, and over 150 of them enrolled in the course! We were shocked by the response! We haven’t even sent anything to our main email list.

And what did you do in Months 2 and 3 to continue the growth?

I continued publishing good content  on our blog for free and helping others when questions about virtualization arose. We put a banner on our blog advertising our courses on Udemy.
I believe the worth of mouth worked out very well for us. We have over 95 reviews and all of them are 5 out of 5.
