Life is full of surprises that can present obstacles and challenges on a daily basis. However, being positive will give us the energy and desire to overcome any difficult periods that come our way. If you need help changing your thinking, keep reading to see how you can be more positive with a few tried-and-true mindsets.
Being Positive By First Giving Thanks
Focusing on items you can be grateful for helps to partake a more positive attitude. If all you think of is everything you lack, then of course you will be sour. Who wouldn’t? Use appreciation whenever you are feeling more down than usual. You can be thankful for anything such as nice weather, a roof over your head (even if it is not the roof you want, it is better than being homeless), your health, your pets, food in your fridge, clothing, power, running water, shoes, personal care items, your job (that helps you pay your bills), family, friends and more. Try to say “Thank You” 20 times in succession on a daily basis. You will start to feel yourself becoming more positive. Do Not Compare Yourself to Others
If we were meant to be like everyone else, wouldn’t the world be a boring place. If all of us were plumbers, who would teach, build businesses or create mobile apps? When you compare yourself to others, you place your thought processes at a disadvantage. There will always be someone more successful and less successful than you.
Even if you surpass your competitor, you will just find someone else to measure yourself against. What’s more, you do not even have any idea of the hurdles that person may have had to overcome to get where they are. Instead, focus on your own accomplishments, and stay proud of yourself for each goal you reach.
Envision a Bright Future
You have one of two choices; you can imagine a gloomy or a happy future. Which would you prefer? Why bother waking up in the morning if you think you’re doomed to failure? Instead, work on changing your mental images.
If you have a dream home, imagine yourself eventually living in that dream home. Touch the furniture and take a whiff of its scents. Picture yourself going on your dream vacation or dating your dream guy or girl. Practicing this exercise will give you hope, which helps you to feel better and more energetic.
Engage in Positive Activities
To illustrate, if you want to watch a movie, choose a comedy instead of a drama. Listen to uplifting instead of degrading or sorrowful music. Read inspiring non-fiction stories such as biographies of individuals who made it out of unconscionable circumstances.
Express yourself creatively through crafts, painting, writing and more. In addition, regular exercise helps to relieve stress and boost your endorphin levels, which make you feel happier. It also helps you to sleep better, so you are less cranky when you wake up. Want a quick, inspiring read? Check out the 10 Positive Body Language Techniques to Help You Succeed.
Understand that Life Is Not Fair
Of course, we all want to be treated the way we feel we deserve. In a perfect world, we would. Nonetheless, the world is not perfect, nor is it fair. The universe is filled with millions upon millions of people. Each of them is striving towards their own individual goals. Even our friends and family have aims they wish to achieve.
So, there will be many times where you will be treated unfairly, through no fault of your own. The worst thing you can do is dwell on it. Understand that these things will happen. Stay away from anger and resentment. Instead, be thankful when things go well.
Similar to the tip above, you have to learn how to let go of things. This does not mean you agree with everything and everyone around you. Not at all. What it does mean is that you can forgive people and not hold on to grudges. When you become unforgiving, the emotion festers inside you. It is a negative emotion that can end up consuming you. Not to mention, it gives power to the individual or organization causing your discontent. Your suffering will not end until you practice forgiveness.
Stay Away from Negative People
Do you notice that positive thoughts give you more energy and negative thoughts drain your energy? The same goes for negative people. There is such as thing as peer pressure. When you surround yourself with negative individuals, you might find that you soon start to mimic their ways, as well. They might complain about every little thing, so you start finding things to complain about, too. If you have friends that gossip constantly, you might get sucked into that type of behavior. By all means possible, try to avoid these types of people. If you cannot, then work harder to be positive when you are around them.

Know that You Can Choose How You React
You do not have to live life on the defense for every circumstance you encounter. It is actually the opposite. It might make you feel better knowing you have a choice in the matter. There is a space between the stimuli and your reaction. Even if something does not go your way, you can always choose to focus on the silver lining. That way, you will not regret your reaction. Instead of giving into emotion, you can choose the more logical reactions. Living with regret also affects a positive state of mind.
Stay in the Present
It is too easy to live in the past or the future. You get stuck in the “if only” mode, such as “if only I did this” or “if only I did that” or “if only I had this job” or “if only I lived here.” All of those things are pure speculation and can lead to discontent very quickly. Not to mention, it can quickly get you into a negative frame of mind. Do not let yourself get carried away with these types of thoughts. If you find yourself doing so, make the effort to bring your mind back into the present. You cannot change the past, and you cannot predict the future.
If you are anxious over an interview, a first date, a family reunion or anything else, use your powers of imagination. Picture each event turning out positively. See, hear and feel it. For example, to help ease nervousness over a job interview, imagine yourself appearing confident and happy. Picture yourself answering the questions without any problems and your interviewer enjoying your conversation. Also, visualize them offering you a job. You can use this technique for any upcoming event. You can start by taking this Udemy course, Reclaiming Your Positive Self-Esteem.
Set Small, Realistic Goals
So, maybe many of us want to be multi-millionaires or even billionaires. However, those types of goals do not happen overnight. There are a series of steps you must take to get there. In terms of goal setting, you want to set achievable goals that build your confidence as you go along.
If you are working a minimum wage job, you probably will not become a millionaire within the next month or year, unless you experience an extremely unlikely situation such as winning the lottery. You will feel more hopeless if you set goals that are too large to attain. Try the S.M.A.R.T method, which stands for, “Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.”
To illustrate, you might want to lose 40 pounds. You know that would take longer than a few weeks. So, you can start off by saying, “I want to lose five lbs. by June 15.” Losing five lbs. is a lot easier than 40. And, once you lose five, you only have 35 more to go.
