If you have never baked a heart shaped cake before there is a great chance that you won’t be having a heart-shaped baking pan just lying around. While it would be ideal to be able to just go out and grab one from the supermarket, there is also a good chance you won’t be making heart-shaped cakes all year round so spending money on something you’ll only use once every year may not be wise. It is however still possible for you to make a heart shaped cake using ordinary pans!
To be able to pull this off successfully you’ll still need to have some basic baking skills so in case you are new to the oven section of your kitchen this pastry course is a good place to start getting to know your kitchen.
The most important thing to have in order to achieve this are two baking pans of the same size but one should be square and the other should be round. Here we will assume that you are using an 8 inch square pan and an 8 inch round pan.
- 1 cake mix (2-layer) – You can choose any flavor you like apart from Angel food.
- 1 cup cold milk
- 1 package instant pudding and pie filling (Vanilla flavor)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 8 ounces whipped topping, thawed
- 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring
- Multicolored sprinkles/small candies
The baking process is quite straightforward. Make sure the oven is preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The cake mix is prepared as directed on the box. After preparing the caking mix divide the batter evenly between the two pans. Both pans should be greased and floured before the batter is poured in. After baking the cake as you’ve been directed on the package allow it to cool for around ten minutes. Working with the cake while it’s still hot may cause it to crumble. For the best results you should cool the cake on wire racks.
As you wait for the cakes to cool pour the milk into a bowl and add the sugar and pudding mix before beating it with a wire whisk. Two minutes of this is sufficient before you gently add the coloring and whipped topping.
Cut the now cool round cake into two halves but leave the square one whole. Turn the square cake so that it turns into a diamond shape and place the two halves of the round cake on the top two sides of the diamond shape and presto, you have a heart cake. You can use a bit of frosting to hold the three pieces of your heart cake together.
Of course the job is not yet finished. From the top it is still quite obvious that your heart cake is in fact several cakes that have been joined to form one. This is where some nifty decorating skills will come in handy. Decorating a cake can allow you to achieve more than you can imagine when it comes to presentation of the cake. This course on cake decoration can show you how you can use your decorating skills at home and also to earn some money.
The decorating of your heart cake is a relatively simple procedure. Since the cakes were of the same size all the parts of the cake will fit together nicely. Apply the frosting you prepared earlier evenly and all over the cake and once the nooks and crannies are well covered up nobody will ever know that your perfectly shaped heart cake is actually two cakes made into one.
Once you’re done applying the frosting is when the real decorating begins. The frosting just provides the canvas on which the real decorating can be done. There are several ways to go about the decorating of a heart cake for Valentine’s Day or any other special occasion. The easiest way is to use sprinkles or candies. This is the easy way out but it still has to be done right or your final masterpiece may fail to impress. Some people may tell you the more the merrier but avoid overdoing it because this may make a mess. You should also choose the right colors so that you get the desired effect.
If you do have some time on your hands then you may really want to put some more effort into it. A cake is always a great place to put a message for your loved one so you could choose to write a message on the cake. It may not be the easiest task but you can also see this as an opportunity to improve your decorating skills. One great tip is to “write” the message in the icing with a toothpick first. That way, you just have to follow the lines with the icing and you can just smooth over the icing if you make a mistake, like not leaving enough room to finish a word.
