full moon meditationThe night of the full moon is a special time, especially for those who are following a spiritual path that gives them a special connection to the moon. People may celebrate the full moon in any number of ways, such as choosing to spend some time out in the fresh night air enjoying its light. One of the most popular ways that people choose to celebrate the time of the full moon, however, is with intensive and cleansing meditation.

There are many reasons to choose to meditate at the time of the full moon. Many individuals may find themselves to be unusually agitated or emotional at this point in the month. That is not surprising, as the moon is deeply and intimately connected with our mind and our thoughts. Meditation can help to cleanse these feelings of agitation, and can even provide us with a great opportunity to let go of the mental or emotional baggage that has been weighing us down. Meditating at the full moon can also help us to unleash our creativity, whether we are focused on specific creative endeavors or are simply in need of a new way of thinking about the problems and issues we are facing in our day-to-day lives. Mindfulness Meditation for Active Lives is a great Udemy course that can help you learn the basics of meditation in order to decompress, so be sure to check it out if you need some pointers for fitting meditation into your busy lifestyle.

Preparing for Meditation

Getting the timing right for full moon meditation is important. Obviously, you will want to be sure that you know in advance when the next full moon will be. Remember that the moon remains more or less full over a five-day period – however, only on one of those days can the moon truly be said to be at its fullest and brightest.

Remember also that the moon rises and sets, much like the sun. Though it is likely to in the sky most of the evening, be sure that you check to see when it will be the most visible. You don’t want to begin your meditation, only to realize that the full moon is not as visible as you would like it to be. Use a moonrise and moonset calculator, which you can find, to get a rough idea of the time frame you are working in. Some sites will even show you the exact moment the moon is “full,” which can allow you to perform your meditation during this very potent time.

Once you have the timing right, think about where you want to perform the meditation. Many individuals will feel most at ease performing a full moon meditation outside, directly in the moon’s light. However, this is not possible for every individual. If you must meditate indoors, determine whether there is a location in your home that will let you see the moon. Clear out a space where you can sit comfortably in the light. This can help you to get the most out of this meditative practice.

Choosing to Meditate With Music

While some individuals prefer complete silence for their meditation, others will find it easier to clear their thoughts from their mind with the use of music. The music that you choose will depend on your own preferences. However, for a full moon meditation it is recommended that you choose something soft, rhythmic, and even possibly feminine in nature. (Bear in mind that the moon is typically associated with the feminine.) You can also choose to create your own music, such as with drums, bells, or flutes. This can be a great way to help focus if you generally find meditation difficult.

Chanting or humming can also be an option that will help you get prepared and focused for the meditation ahead of you. This maybe especially important to you if you are using the timing of the full moon in order to help replenish and balance your chakras. Udemy offers a great 7 Day Yoga Course that can help you learn to increase your energy and balance your chakras if this is something that you would like to learn more about.

Steps Toward Full Moon Meditation

There is no specific type of meditation just for use during the full moon, and virtually any type of meditative practice can be modified for use during the full moon. Consider using a type of meditation that you are familiar with in order to gain the most benefits from your full moon meditation. If you do not have any one specific type of meditation that you follow, you can choose to make use of the following steps.

1. Begin by finding a comfortable position to sit in, or even to lie down in if that is your preference. Be sure that you are able to let your body relax.  Many will sit in the traditional lotus position with their palms facing upward, as this will allow them to open up their bodies and relax more easily. Wear comfortable clothing, and be sure that the space where you are seated is comfortable as well. If you are outside, think about using a blanket so no items or objects, or even insects, disturb you.

2. Clear your mind. Focus your attention on the light of the moon and nothing else. If you are outside and have any noise to contend with, using a pair of headphones and the music you have chosen can make it easier to do this. Release all of the anxiety, tension, and stress that has been bothering you and allow your mind to empty completely. Remember not to become frustrated if stray thoughts creep in. Simply release them as they occur and return to your meditative state.

3. Consider the use of a mantra, if that will help you focus. This can ensure that your mind remains cleared of everything but the mantra that you have chosen to speak during this practice. If there are any specific issues in your life that you need to take care of, choose a positive message that will help you overcome these obstacles and heal. Udemy offers a great Meditation for Healing course that can help you further your goals and live a better life through the power of meditation.

4. The amount of time that you meditate will depend on your ability to keep your mind clear and your patience with the task. The longer you are able to meditate the better, generally speaking. However, do keep in mind that a solid session of meditation can be ruined if you end it by constantly checking your watch to see if it’s time to end it. When you’re ready to finish, take a deep breath and release the last bit of tension from your body. Then clear your space. In most cases, by the time you finish it will be time for you to head to bed, so feel free to make use of your relaxed state to get an incredible night’s sleep.
