easy arts and craftsYou are going to have those days when there is nothing good to watch on television, the internet is dead, and there are absolutely no good movies out in theaters.  Instead of laying down on the couch for a nap, why not try to be a little creative?  We know that with all the technology in the word today that is incredibly fast, instantaneous, and creative without requiring much thought – it can be hard to sit down and try to do something yourself from scratch.  As our grandparents would say, “Back in our day…”  But it is true, back in the day, people used to do other things with their free time that had nothing to do with posting selfies on Instagram or making the best seven second Snap Chat.  Today, we are going to dig down deep for the creative side that we know you have.  Here are some wonderful and easy arts and craft ideas that can get you started on exercising that lazy part of your technology-laden brain!

Origami Butterflies

Origami is a fun way to get your hands working while creating something pretty and cute out of almost nothing.  Let these little paper butterflies flutter into your heart.

You Will Need:

  • A sheet or origami paper that is around 6×6 inches
  • Glue and scissors
  • A 4 inch strip of ribbon
  • 2 google eyes
  • Markers

Steps:

  1. Fold your origami paper in half to make a triangle.
  2. Fold it in half again to make an even smaller triangle.
  3. Unfold the second triangle so you are left with creases.  Then, fold each side back so that it you cross the center crease at an angle.
  4. Unfold and you have your butterfly!
  5. Cut your ribbon in pieces for an antennae, glue on your google eyes, and decorate your butterfly wings with marker.
  6. Fly away!

Seashell Sailboat

Thinking about getting away?  Create this nifty sailboat out of a simple seashell, and you will be well on your way to your ideal destination.  Dare to dream!

You Will Need:

  • A small triangle, cut from a table cloth, felt, or construction paper.
  • A twig, straw, or Popsicle stick.
  • Clay.
  • A cleaned and washed sea shell.

Steps:

  1. Cut your triangle to shape it into a sail for your boat.
  2. Cut off the tip of the triangle to keep it steady when floating, and snip openings along the edge of the triangle so that you will be able to insert your mast (ie: twig, straw, etc).
  3. Thread your mast through the triangle’s slits.
  4. Take a small lump of clay and press it into your shell where you want to position your mast.
  5. Place the mast firmly into the shell.
  6. Sail away!

Paperweights

These are the perfect gift for any Dad, a Teacher or Professor, your hard-working significant other, or just for someone with a lot of papers on their desk.

You Will Need:

  • 1/4th cup of salt
  • 1/4th cup of water
  • ½ cup of flour
  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Cookie Sheet
  • Pebbles, small decorative rocks or charms

Steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees.
  2. In a bowl, mix together your salt, water, and flour to create the dough.  Make sure that you mix well until your ingredients look like cookie dough!
  3. Take the contents into a ball and roll it out onto a cooking sheet.
  4. Take your pebbles, rocks, or charms, and place them as desired into your flour creation.
  5. Place your creation in the oven for two hours until it is dry and stiff.  Remove and let it cool overnight.
  6. Keep your papers in place!

Zen Garden

You Will Need:

  • 1 Plate
  • Salt or Sand
  • 1 small fork
  • Stones or pebbles

Steps:

  1. Fill your plate with salt or sand.
  2. Use your fork to apply a soothing and calming pattern to the contents.
  3. Add in your stones or pebbles as desired.
  4. Sit back and reflect, meditate, or practice deep breathing.

Stripped Flower Vase

Put your blooming flowers in this gorgeous handmade vase for a lovely Spring centerpiece on your table or in your living room.

You Will Need:

  • 1 Glass jar
  • Masking Tape
  • Glass Paint of your choice color
  • Paint Brush

Steps:

  1. Remove any labels from your jar and soak the jar in warm soapy water to remove the residue.  Allow it time to dry.
  2. Place vertical strips (masking tape) around the jar.  Use however much or little you desire.
  3. Paint!  Paint your strips however you would like.  Use colors that will go well with the space you want to put it in, or to go with the appropriate season.  Once you are finished, set it aside to let your paint dry overnight.
  4. All done!  Fill you vase with water or pebbles on the bottom, and stick in your flowers.  Time to freshen up any area of your room, office, or house!

Ants on A Log

All this crafting is bound to make you hungry!  It might be time to make something cute that can be enjoyed by your tummy as well.  Try out this quick and easy snack idea that will satisfy your hunger to pump up your creative and crafty mind for the rest of the day!

You Will Need:

  • 4 already cut celery sticks.
  • Peanut butter or alternative nut butter.
  • Raisins
  • 1 Small Bowl
  • 1 Spoon

Steps:

  1. Make sure your hands are clean and wash your celery.
  2. Take a spoonful of peanut butter and spread it onto your celery log.
  3. Take some raisins and push your raisins into the peanut butter.
  4. Enjoy!  This healthy snack incorporates protein, veggies, vitamin A, and healthy fats to keep you strong and healthy.
